The Inspiration and Planning Guide is an exlusive look at our most brilliant creations. I’m so excited to share some of my ideas and inspire you with possibilities for your new Outdoor Living Space. A Great Outdoor Living Space is an investment but it will one of the best investments into your home and Life!

My Story

I was in 5th grade when life dealt me a devastating blow. My sisters and I were wards of the state and we spent our early years going from foster to foster home. Finally the state found someone to adopt us but there was one problem . The prospective new parents only had room for my two younger sisters. Losing my sisters was one of the toughest days of my life. Unfortunately things got even tougher when I moved into my next foster home. For the next year and a half I was deprived of food and was forced to stay in a bedroom, only to get out to go to the bathroom and for school. It was through those tough circumstances of being locked in a room that ended up being one of the biggest blessing my life. Every day I would look out my window and stare at the beauty outdoors. The outdoors gave me hope. The sky, combined with the ever changing clouds and daily weather system’s served to be my theater. When it rained or snowed, I would open my window and fill my lungs with the fresh smell of moisture. Daily I would gaze at beautiful wildlife like deer, squirrels and birds. Being locked in a room gave me an opportunity to truly appreciate the incredible world outdoors. After graduating from high school, I moved to Colorado to attend architectural school and start an Outdoor Living Company. My goal was to create beautiful outdoor spaces that allowed my clients to enjoy the great outdoors no matter the wind weather or season. Many of my spaces received national recognition in magazines and newspapers. Finally HGTV’s DIY network and Great American Country developed a TV series called Mega Decks that showcased many of my greatest creations. The TV series was a national hit and is still airing today. After 30 plus years of serving my Outdoor Living company as Founder and President, I was rewarded with a phenomenal opportunity to move on and start my new company Masterpiece Outdoor Living. Today I’m so thankful to have the opportunity to create one of a kind Outdoor Living spaces that capture the best of Colorado’s Magnificent Outdoors and serve the needs of my Masterpiece Clients.

When it comes to creating your perfect Outdoor Living Space there are a few things you need to consider.

What is your exposure to the wind, sun and elements?

It’s impossible to enjoy being outside if your being blasted by the elements. I Developed the Four Season Deck that utilizes full view operable glass walls that capture your views while protecting you from wind and weather.

A solid roof or pergola over a portion of your space will greatly help with your sun exposure.

Superior Steel Frame System

Of the most important things to consider when building a new deck is the structural system. The framing system needs to be strong and never rot. Our solution is to build our decks out of galvanized structural steel. This provides the perfect frame system for today’s state-of-the-art decking composites.

If you have an eastern exposure, or you want more of a simple space, an open-air deck works great. Add a fire and ambient lighting and you will get a lot of enjoyment after the sun goes down.

Beginning of Patio Project

A majority of Our Outdoor Spaces are Deck’s but sometimes your property is better suited to utilize concrete or other hardscape materials.

Having an Expert Designer who can suggest the best materials and put together a plan that looks like it belongs will make a huge difference.

This is how the Concrete Outdoor Living space turned out. Full view operable glass walls extend out of the fireplace and outdoor kitchen to provide protection when from the elements, then invisibly close up when the season and weather are nice. Heaters and fire features make this an awesome Four Season Space.

When you are planning out your new space, consider integrating your inside and outside spaces. You will be amazed how much your Indoor Space will improve by connecting it with your Outside Space.

If you’re blessed with beautiful mountain views, then you’re cursed with wind, extreme sun and weather. This is why I developed the Four Season Deck.

It gives you best of all worlds. Your views are framed in Full View Glass Walls that can open or close depending on wind, weather or season.

When planning your new outside space, consider having part of your space open air so you can enjoy watching our beautiful Colorado sunsets.

Another great feature to consider when planning your space is a BBQ area or Outdoor Kitchen. One of the keys to getting the best performance out of your BBQ is making sure it’s out of the wind. If that’s not possible, a wind deflecting wall should really help.

Most people think of Outdoor living only as a summer experience. Check out this beautiful Four Season Space photographed in the heart of winter. Life is short, enjoy every day.

If your home has an upper Deck, consider the possibilities below.

By adding a water proof system to the upper Deck I was able to create a beautiful Outdoor living Space below.

When I create a Living space below a Deck, I like to open everything up by getting rid of unnecessary columns. Add plenty of lighting and some heaters and you will have the space you will love to use.

A Fireplace is a great feature to add value and ambiance. I like to position so it serves as a privacy wall and takes your eye to the View.

Four Season Deck and Patio

When your backdoor is close to the ground, a combination of Deck and Patio can be a great option for an Outdoor Living Space. The Deck can be designed so it’s your perfect Four Season Space, and when summer arrives your patio can be the perfect place to enjoy a beautiful Colorado evening under the stars. This is also a relatively maintenance-free solution.

If you have plenty of space in your backyard, a Patio can be a dramatic Outdoor Living space option. One thing to remember is that a Patio in Colorado will mostly be used between the months of June to September. If you have the resources to combine Patio with a Deck that protects you from the elements, that will give the best of all Worlds.
